Food waste collection introduced

A weekly food waste collection is to be introduced by South Gloucestershire Council to make the authority greener.

The recycling facility at Stoke Gifford will also be upgraded and residents offered free composting bins.

Residents already recycle some 40% of waste - the fifth best rate for a unitary authority in England. The council wants to boost this to 50%.

It also plans to introduce a £15 charge for the collection of bulky items, in line with Bristol City Council.

Councillor Heather Goddard said: "We are committed to being as environmentally responsible as possible and providing excellent, cost effective services.

"We want to achieve recycling rates of least 50% by 2010/11, which would be 10 years ahead of the government target."
